Activ8
Activ8's philosophy is reflected in the rigorous instructor training program we have developed. We firmly believe that a good instructor should have knowledge and skills far beyond the Jujitsu syllabus. All instructors are required to progress through a series of stages where they are taught to develop their knowledge and understanding of physiology, anatomy, and basic Japanese, but also how to foster a sense of self-worth, enthusiasm and positivity amongst the students they teach, regardless of their age or ability. There is an emphasis on the development of teaching skills which focuses on body language, the tone and modulation of the voice, behaviour management, inclusion and above all, how to make sessions challenging and fun.

Meet our Team
Chief Instructor: Gary Standaloft
Gary is the founder and Chief Instructor of Activ8 Self Defence, with over 40 years of experience in various martial arts, including Ju-jitsu, Kung Fu, Judo, Karate, Taekwondo, and Krav Maga. He established Activ8 more than 25 years ago, driven by his lifelong passion for martial arts.
Senior Instructor: Andrew Armistead
Andy is our Senior Instructor. He has been a teacher for over thirty years in a local secondary school and has worked with challenging young people as well as elite athletes, across the district. He has years of active experience working successfully in the most difficult of situations and with the most damaged of young people. Andy has a sporting background, having played rugby at a high level and taking up martial arts following the end of a long playing career. He has over twenty years of martial arts experience and, as a PE and Psychology teacher, he has substantial coaching expertise, specialising in fitness, physiology and the sporting mind. Andy has been a pastoral leader and senior teacher in a local secondary school for many years with a focus on behaviour and mental health. He is also a Principal Examiner with a major exam board and delivers revision sessions that focus not only on content but also on preparation for times of stress as presented by formal examinations. He has experience working with children with significant behaviour issues and additional educational needs. Andy has chosen to step back from teaching and use his skills to benefit the young people in the Activ8 sphere and can offer guidance to young people, adults and teachers.
Assistant Instructor: Aaron

He earned his junior black belt in 2015, and acheived his adult black belt in 2023. He now teaches in schools and assists with gradings. He strongly believes that additional needs are not barriers to success: "If you work hard and stay focused, you can acheive your goals in life".
